DC systems, batteries & charging

Bank capacity, charging sources and distribution are one system, and a fault in one shows up as a symptom in another. Banks are load-tested before anything is quoted, and cable is sized for the actual load and run length rather than assumed.

Marine electronics & instruments

Installation, integration and fault-finding across the major marine electronics brands — Raymarine, Garmin, Simrad, B&G and Furuno. A reported display failure is usually a network, power or termination fault, and that is ruled out before any unit is replaced. Autopilot commissioning has its own page.

Shore power, 230 V AC & fault-finding

Marina trips, earth faults and voltage drop. AC circuits are measured under load with the shore lead connected, which is the only condition in which most of these faults appear.

Watermaker electrical & controls

A watermaker presents the largest step load on most vessels, and most reported failures are electrical rather than hydraulic. Supply, starting current and control circuits are measured while the unit runs — membranes and pump hydraulics are not serviced.

Passarelle, gangway & tender systems

Remote-controlled passarelles, gangways and tender garage doors fail on their control side far more often than mechanically. Receivers, relays, limit switches and interlocks are proven end to end, on the electrical side — hydraulic pump rebuilds and structural metalwork are not carried out.

Underwater & architectural lighting

Underwater fittings are cooled by the water they sit in, so a light that dims on the hard and works afloat is protection operating rather than a fault. Drivers, supply and volt drop across the run aft are measured at the fitting, afloat and under load.

Autopilot commissioning & calibration

Autolearn tunes rudder response, not heading — a pilot holding a steady but wrong course has a deviation or alignment problem no amount of autolearn will fix. Drive limits, feedback and polarity are set alongside; the compass swing and response tuning need a sea trial.

Faults reported most often

Scheduled work

Berth-side annual electrical inspection

A planned check of the whole electrical installation, carried out afloat at the berth over a single attendance. Booked ahead of the season rather than called out against a fault.

The inspection reports what was measured. It is not a survey, and it does not certify the vessel to any scheme.

  • AC & DC distribution Every distribution board opened, terminations checked for heat and movement, and circuits confirmed against their labelling.
  • RCD trip testing Residual current devices tested for trip current and trip time, rather than pressed and assumed working.
  • Insulation resistance Measured per circuit, so a bank of readings taken this year can be compared against next year’s.
  • Thermal imaging High-current switchboard connections, busbars and terminations scanned under load — a joint on its way out runs hot long before it trips, and a scan taken cold shows nothing.
  • Bank condition Battery bank tested under load and per block, with the figures recorded against each block rather than the bank as a whole.
  • Shore power & earthing Inlet, lead and the safety-earth path checked with the vessel connected, including galvanic isolation where fitted.
  • Written inspection record Readings, photographs and a defect list with priorities, handed over as a document you keep.
